This is so interesting. I tried a chalk marker a while back but it seemed to wipe off. Now I'm thinking it was just a brand problem. So I'm going to try again with this brand. The white marker/ pen conundrum is truly a challenge so I am excited that this might be the solution! While you have made the point that the water soluble nature can be a plus for highlights it is also something I have to remember so I don't paint over my perfect letters.🤪

Yes, you probably have to be careful not to paint over them, but in my case, the marker would be on my top layer anyway. I don't feel it is any different than how I have to be sure to protect my watercolor too. I am going to do a few more tests and check back.

Thanks Jessica! We’re these purchased locally/in person or online?

Some of both. I know I got some at Amazon but I think Hobby Lobby carries them too. The four pack and the others I use in the color painting tutorial are all fine tip and I believe that was Amazon. Search the brand and see.

I'm wondering if the chalk pen would stand a coat of Dorlan's wax medium? I think it would wipe off.

No water in wax so I think it would be fine. The “chalk” pen is actually acrylic paint. I seal some of my watercolor with that wax and it doesn’t disturb anything. If I can find my wax, I will try it and let you know.

Thanks for this, Jessica. Do you find that these dry out "quickly" (or relatively so)? I've used a variety of white pens for lettering, accents and highlighting with my watercolor sketchbook but when I go back to use them a few weeks later, they're often dead/dried up (even though capped carefully and well). You live in a dry environment so I'm guessing your experience with them will be true proof if they don't dry up too easily!

I have been amazed. I haven't even opened my 4 pack yet. I have been using the original white from the first set I bought since last March!! I just looked it up and I had no idea it was that long. I think this is because I don't use much paint at a time, but I use the pen all the time and shake it when I use it. I actually paint with the colored ones and none have dried out yet. Bought them all a year ago.
